In brief

Vitamin injections deliver B12, Vitamin C, or a B-complex directly into muscle tissue, bypassing the digestive system and achieving near-complete absorption into the bloodstream. This is the clinical difference between an oral supplement and an injectable one: bioavailability. Sessions take fifteen minutes, require no recovery, and can be repeated weekly or monthly depending on the formulation and your goals. The treatment is appropriate for patients with documented deficiency, limited dietary intake, or absorption issues, and for those who want to maintain optimal levels of nutrients that play a documented role in energy metabolism, immune function, and cellular health. Available by appointment at Skin Aesthetics by Krystian, 15 Old Bridge Close, Bursledon, Southampton SO31 8AX.

What it is

The gut is a filter. Injections skip it.

Oral vitamins and supplements are absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract, a process subject to considerable individual variation. Gut health, digestive enzyme activity, the presence of food in the stomach, and competition from other nutrients all affect how much of what you swallow actually reaches the bloodstream. For some vitamins and some patients, the majority of an oral dose passes through without meaningful absorption. Intramuscular injection eliminates that variable: the vitamin is deposited directly into muscle tissue, from which it is absorbed into systemic circulation without intestinal processing.

Three formulations are available at Skin Aesthetics by Krystian. Vitamin B12 (hydroxocobalamin or methylcobalamin) is the most frequently requested. B12 is essential for red blood cell formation, neurological function, and DNA synthesis. Deficiency is more common than many patients realise, particularly in those following plant-based diets, those over fifty, and those with gastrointestinal conditions such as Crohn's disease or coeliac disease. Vitamin C injected intramuscularly achieves plasma concentrations significantly higher than oral supplementation; it is used to support immune function, collagen synthesis, and antioxidant defence. B-complex injections deliver the full spectrum of B vitamins in a single dose, supporting energy metabolism, nervous system function, and cellular repair.

Bioavailability is the variable worth understanding.

Clinical literature documents that oral B12 absorption in patients with deficiency or absorption difficulties is often less than two per cent of the dose consumed. Intramuscular B12, by contrast, achieves near-complete systemic availability. This is not a reason to conclude that injections are always superior to supplements for every patient; it is a reason to understand that for patients where oral absorption is the limiting factor, the route of delivery changes the clinical outcome.

Vitamin injections are appropriate for patients who want to address or prevent documented nutrient deficiency, support energy and immune function at a level not achievable through diet and oral supplementation alone, or include targeted nutritional support within a broader wellness programme. They are not a substitute for medical investigation of persistent fatigue, immune dysfunction, or neurological symptoms, and Krystian will recommend a GP referral where symptoms suggest an underlying cause that warrants investigation.

The considered version

Three things to consider first.

Vitamin injections are straightforward, but the right formulation and frequency depend on your baseline and what you are looking to achieve.

i.

Deficiency versus optimisation

Patients with documented deficiency will notice a more pronounced functional improvement from vitamin injections than those with normal baseline levels. If you have not had recent blood work, Krystian may recommend testing before beginning a regular injection programme to establish your starting point.

ii.

Frequency and programme design

B12 injections for deficiency are often administered weekly for an initial loading phase before moving to monthly maintenance. Vitamin C and B-complex are typically weekly or fortnightly. The appropriate frequency depends on your baseline and your goals, and Krystian will advise accordingly.

iii.

Injections within a broader programme

Vitamin injections work well alongside aesthetic treatments that benefit from supporting nutrition: collagen synthesis for skin-quality treatments, antioxidant support around laser or peel procedures, and immune support during a period of recovery. Krystian can advise on sequencing where multiple treatments are being considered.

The appointment

Fifteen minutes, start to finish.

The appointment is brief. The consultation before it determines what you receive and why.

00:00

Brief consultation

Krystian reviews your health history, any relevant symptoms or blood results, and what you are hoping to achieve. The appropriate formulation and any contraindications are confirmed.

00:05

Preparation

The injection site, typically the deltoid or gluteal muscle, is prepared. The formulation is drawn up and checked.

00:08

Injection

The vitamin solution is administered by intramuscular injection using a fine needle. The process takes under one minute.

00:12

Brief and next steps

Any mild post-injection sensation is noted. Krystian advises on the recommended interval before the next session and answers any questions about what to expect in the hours that follow.

Considered questions

The honest version.

The questions every patient is too polite to ask out loud. Read at your pace.

Do I need to be deficient to benefit?

Not necessarily, though patients with documented deficiency will typically notice the most pronounced improvement. Those with low-normal levels, restricted diets, or absorption difficulties often benefit meaningfully from regular injections. Krystian will discuss your specific situation at consultation and recommend blood testing if it would help establish an informed starting point.

How quickly will I notice a difference?

This varies with the formulation and the starting point. Patients with significant B12 deficiency often notice an improvement in energy and cognitive clarity within days of the first injection. Those with near-normal baseline levels may notice a subtler effect over a course of sessions. Vitamin C and B-complex effects are similarly variable and tend to be most noticeable during periods of high physical or immune demand.

Can I not just take supplements?

You can, and for many patients with healthy gut function and normal absorption, oral supplements are an appropriate and cost-effective approach. Where absorption is the limiting factor, whether due to gastrointestinal conditions, age-related changes in intrinsic factor production, or diet-related intake limits, intramuscular delivery achieves systemic levels that oral supplementation cannot reliably match.

Are there any interactions I should know about?

Certain medications affect B12 metabolism or absorption, including metformin and long-term proton pump inhibitor use. Krystian reviews your medication list at consultation and will flag any relevant considerations. This is also why a brief health review precedes every injection session.

Risks & contraindications

What we tell you before we begin.

  • Injection site sorenessMild tenderness or aching at the injection site is common for one to two days and resolves without intervention.
  • BruisingSmall bruises at the injection site occur occasionally; they resolve within a few days.
  • Allergic reactionSerious allergic reactions to vitamin injection formulations are rare but possible; Krystian asks about known allergies before every session.
  • Nerve or vessel injuryWith correct anatomical injection technique, this risk is very low; it is managed by precise site selection and an experienced practitioner.
  • ExclusionsPregnancy or breastfeeding (discuss with GP before proceeding), known allergy to any component of the formulation, active local infection at the intended injection site, and haemophilia or other clotting disorders.

Vitamin injections carry one of the lowest risk profiles of any clinical procedure; the consultation and brief health review before each session are in place to ensure this remains the case.
